In the Darkness

Dearly Beloved,

     As you lie on your bed in the darkness of the night, know that your ways are not hidden from my eyes. Do you think that my arms are too short to reach you, my eyes too dim to see or my ears too deaf to hear your cry. No. There is nothing kept from my eyes. I am with you. Even if all family and friends leave you,
I will not.

     Why has this fear gripped you? Why do you tremble in the night? Be still........

     The Holy One is your God. Do you think that I only walk with you when everything is going well and I abandon you in the midst of trouble? You say to yourself, "I am alone. No one sees my trials." Why would I leave you in the darkness of the night?
I will not.

     I want you to call upon me in prayer. This trial has not come into your life to overwhelm and destroy you but for you to learn to lean upon and trust in your God. Then you will see how great I am!! In the quiet of the darkness I will show you myself in a way that you could not see in the busyness of the light. There you will find the peace that comes from trusting your whole self to me. I will take care of you. I will give you light in the darkness. I will comfort your grief. I will heal your brokenness. In Me alone you will find all that you need.

     I will exchange your fear and distress in the night for a deep rest that comes from knowing that God sees your way and has compassion on those who seek Him. Seek me. As you lie on your bed, songs will rise from you in the night. You will rest knowing that you are not walking alone. I am walking with you and will show you the path through the valley of darkness.

Be Still, My Soul
A hymn written by Katharina von Schlegel

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide:
In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Thro’ thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
to guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
